The barren beauty is certainly worth a visit. You can visit many of the islands by boat, using public transport.

Attention foreigners!
Certain areas in the archipelago may only be entered by Swedish citizens, because of extensive military installations. You can seek permission to visit those areas at a police office. This is usually granted, but the application procedure may take a few days.

The Fish harbour
If you're an early riser, the fish harbour - or 'fiskehamnen' - is a good place to wait for the rest of the world to wake up. Watch the fish auctions, but don't wave or nod to any friends, or you might unexpectedly be the owner of a large crate of fish.

Ostindiefararen Götheborg
At the Terra Nova shipyard The Swedish East India Company AB is currently building the East Indiaman "Götheborg", a magnificent 18th century-style ship, out of oak and pine. She will be an exact replica of the historical ship "Götheborg". The original Göteborg sank in 1745 outside Göteborg harbour when arriving from China. Fabrics and tea were recovered from the holds and sold. These sales went so well, that the voyage actually made a profit, despite the ship being lost! The ship then was more or less forgotten until 1986, after which she was recovered an is now being rebuilt. The launch of the new "Götheborg" will take place in the year 2002.
